I am not a professional, I do not train a few days a week, I rather ride only for pleasure – I do not set any very ambitious goals (like taking part in a marathon cycle). The answer to this question is basically very simple. You have to drive 🙂 And here I could finish the answer 😉 You just have to mobilize and walk a few miles more through small steps. In the spring, we start with short rides at a calm pace to remind ourselves of “how it goes”.

Long distance cycling

We drive recreationally 10-30 kilometers, visiting the nearest area. During this time we are getting used again (if someone did not ride in the winter on the trainer) his buttocks to the saddle and the pedaling leg.

Over time, we start to drive more 20-50 kilometers, still dispensing the pace, so as not to push through. Generally, preparing for a long trip does not mean, in my opinion, driving within the limits of its possibilities. Driving time counts, not its pace. After some time we will notice that the average speed has increased slightly, and short trips are not enough. Of course, if possible, it is worth increasing the distance traveled once, even at weekends.

Amateurs (like me) should not use the training calendar, because it kills the pleasure of the ride (I’m going because I have it written in the starter, and not because I want to) – unless someone has such a poor will that he must follow such guidelines long distance cycling trips use to have motivation.

I am just as skeptical about measuring heart rate or cadence (number of crank turns per minute). Okay – you could definitely train better thanks to that, but it can also kill all the driving pleasure. Of course, I do not deny these devices – but these are useful things for people who are more serious about riding and preparing, for example, for a series of marathons or triathlon.

Tips and tricks

Before a long trip, it is worth taking a few longer, weekend trips. It is best to drive more than we plan to cross during the trip. If we are thinking about a 7-day trip, where it goes on average 120 kilometers a day – let’s make a getaway for 280 or 300 km in two days. It is worth to prepare the body for a long-term effort.

If it is going to be a trip with panniers, with full tents in the form of a tent, sleeping bag, mats – let’s do the same on shorter trips to get used to the load. But! Nothing on the power and it would always be nice, not blood, sweat and tears 🙂 Of course, this is not to avoid suckers, but also to avoid the situation that we will not be able to move for three days.
