If you follow American Succession near or far the news of cycling, you could not miss the information last weekend. Well, you may not have noticed it, since the major media did not make one of them. And yet, something incredible happened at the US road championships.
Taylor Phinney confirms all her talent
Hostilities began on Saturday, 18 September, with the time trial race on a 33.3 km course. The participation was not really raised, except the veteran Levi Leipheimer, author of a season more than average, but always a reference in the timed exercise. It was hard to see who could beat him, and yet…
A few days before the race, young prodigy Taylor Phinney, from the Trek-Livestrong team, announced the color. At the age of 20, he did not hesitate to provoke his elder Radioshack on Twitter, explaining that he was aiming for neither more nor less than a first place… You are looking to buy a fast, cheap and light best road bike.
This exceptional runner is not even a professional runner yet, but his record has already made him dream a lot. He has indeed won the last two editions of the world championship pursuit, with a world record at the key, and, in a completely different register, Espoir editions of Paris-Roubaix in 2009 and 2010. Nothing but that!
Thus, on D-day, he went to fetch the stars by beating Levi Leipheimer by 14 hundredths of a second, to become one of the youngest US elite champions of the time. Beautiful performance, which calls others for the future. No doubt, this runner will spark. He has just signed up for several seasons with Cadel Evans’ BMC team. To get a leading position from his first rounds in the professional peloton?
Trek-Livestrong puts it back
In the United States of American Succession, nothing is like elsewhere. Thus, the national online championship takes place the day after that of the time trial. This feature does not leave much room for recovery for those who choose to compete in both events.
Anyway, our friend Leipheimer, slightly upset at the end of the time trial, clearly announced the color for the race online. He wanted revenge and was going to use his power to show these little kids that he was not finished. Even if the course was not particularly hilly, the RadioShack rider has already shown us in the past that he is able to take his responsibilities. Best cycling tips in USA is a great country and people of this country love to ride bicycles…
But another runner from Trek-Live strong was going to thwart Leipheimer’s plans. As a reminder, this team, owned by Lance Armstrong and led by Axel Merckx, is composed only of riders under 23 years old. It can be considered that it is the reserve team of the great RadioShack.
Let’s go back to our US championship. Pretty fast in the race, a breakaway of 4 men was going to take a good lead. Scenario classic tells me, the peloton being used to handle these situations to return on the attackers in the last kilometers. What this unfortunate platoon did not expect was that a member of the breakaway resists and become the United States road champion. And what no one had imagined is that this runner would be only 21 years old!
And yes, you read correctly, it is a kid from Trek-Live strong who wins the race, the so-called Ben King. Rather brilliant this season in the ranks hopes, it was not imagined at such a party. Intern at the end of the season in the RadioShack team, he has certainly acquired the “cash” needed to get this title. He will be a professional rider in the same team in 2011, and we will be able to follow him closely!
Note that his teammate Phinney still finishes at a beautiful 8th place…
