If you cannot get to a place by car or train (or it is very time-consuming), consider transport bicycle on plane for air travel by plane. Currently – thanks to low-cost airlines, you can travel all over Europe and even further at a reasonable price. Of course, you should be aware of the salty surcharge for everything (especially luggage), but you just need to add it to the ticket price and then compare with other airlines.
Transport bicycle on a plane
Please check the details of the essay on bicycle transport on the carrier’s website. Some allow the carriage of a bicycle without a special packaging, but most require a box or a bag. The packaging of the bike reduces the risk of its destruction and allows you to baggage luggage if the weight limits allow it.
Ryan air charges a fee of 40 € for transporting a bicycle on a plane (up to 30 kg) – a lot, but the weight limit allows you to add most (or all) of our equipment to it. The size of the package is also the limit: 81 cm high, 119 cm wide and 119 cm deep. Lufthansa takes as much as 70 € for sports equipment up to 32 kilograms, but our Polish LOT will be satisfied with the amount of 50 € for luggage up to 30 kilograms.
Airlines do not seem to be making a problem with taking the bikes on board; after all, it’s an extra income for them. The problem starts when we want to transport the bike safely. Best planning and preparation for travel in your mission
What to pack a bike for transporting on an airplane?
In order for the bike to reach its destination in an unbroken state, it must be packed well. You should be aware that the airport staff does not treat luggage in a delicate way. Usually, the time to load/unload the aircraft is limited, and this is not conducive to taking care of travelers’ luggage. There are several options to pack the bike well.
1) Suitcase (trunk) bicycle – the most solid way to transport to your advantages of bicycle riding. These types of suitcases can be found in such companies as Thule, Biker shop, Radon or bestbikeus.com blog. This type of “armor” will protect the bike properly in 100% – this is ensured by a strong construction and a large amount of shock absorbing foam.
The cons of such suitcases are three (four). In order to become a happy owner, you need to spend about 1000-1600 zlotys. But when transporting a bicycle worth several dozen times more – it will definitely be a good investment. The second disadvantage is the mass of a 10-14 kilogram trunk – it makes it difficult to move around with the bicycle inserted into it.
The third disadvantage transport bicycle is the problem of what to do with the suitcase upon arrival. When we come back from the same airport – no problem, we leave it in the luggage room. When we want to come back from another airport, we should learn to head out. The fourth disadvantage applies to people who would like to bag the rest of tourist equipment – despite the fact that the suitcases are very large – it is rather impossible to put their full contents of large panniers. The test of one of the suitcases can be found on the Best bike website.
2) Bicycle carton – this is one of the most popular methods of bicycle packaging described on web pages about bicycle trips. It is definitely an economical solution because you can ask for a cardboard box in every major best online bike shop and we should get it without a problem. When packing a bike it is worth to buy a bubble wrap (10-20 PLN), which we wrap everything that you can + we stuff up free spaces or luggage, or the rest of the film. Generally, the bicycle (or any of its unscrewed parts) cannot move on the carton. Of course, to pack the bicycle we unscrew the front wheel (plus rear if necessary), steering wheel, pedals, seat post and usually also). After packaging, the card should be sealed with a strong and wide adhesive tape and tightly attached with a string (this will make it easier to carry it a bit).
The problem appears on the way back (if we plan it by plane), a little different from the suitcase (which we throw away the damage) – but no less troublesome. If you come back from the same airport, you can leave the cardboard box in the luggage room (expensive!), Count on a good soul in a store at the airport or nearby (read a kilometer) resident – but I would not stick to this option.
If we come back from another airport, in my opinion, the most sensible way out is to get to know where the best bike store near me (and in what hours open) in the area. It is good to have a bubble wrap with you, in which we packed the bike before the arrival, or at least part of it.
We pack the bike, securing all delicate parts and dirty ones (chain, cassette) and cover with the equipment that will absorb it. It only remains to catch a taxi and get to the airport.
3) Bicycle bag – a compromise between a suitcase and a bag is a carton. The simplest bag can be seen by us, combining large bazaar sates into one whole. You can also buy such a bag; many companies have in their offers, such as problems or Accent. There are different versions: without foam, which can usually be folded, packed into panniers and taken with you or padded with foam (or with foam elements), which are on average suitable for further transport and can be treated as a much cheaper alternative pioneer bike shop to a bicycle case.
Rolled covers seem to be a nice choice for those who do not have the opportunity to play around to find a bicycle carton on the spot. It should only be remembered that such a case occupies a large part of the place in panniers and weighs 2-3 kilograms.
Despite these inconveniences, it is worth considering a plane trip. It is much faster and more convenient than traveling by car or train (and often cheaper). Karol also wrote about the transport of a bicycle in a plane from the blog – I invite you to read his entry.
